This is a study by one of Spain's leading wine writers of the devastating effect of phylloxera in his own region of Valencia. It explains how the late arrival of phylloxera to this part of Europe had a double impact. First, it provided an opportunity to export wines in bulk at high prices to France and other European countries whose vines had already been wiped out saw traditional winemaking craftsmanship cast aside in favour of rapid returns. Then, when phylloxera did eventually arrive in Valencia, the vines were destroyed just as they were recovering elsewhere. When wine production gradually resumed, the region's centuries-old reputation.
